Eurovision Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

An freshly coined term surfaced several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to care for a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.

Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is completely different.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted peace has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
