Offspring of Former South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terrorism Accusations as Legal Proceedings Begins
The offspring of ex- South African Leader Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked allegations at the beginning of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on digital networks in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her father.
A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in the summer of 2021, including theft and fire-setting, caused at least 300 individuals dead and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
The defendant has been charged of encouraging this unrest and faces accusations of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
Background of the Case
The demonstrations were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KZN and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a legal directive to give evidence at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney previously labelling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.
She has also frequently stated the accusations against her were an effort to address political scores with her father after he founded his own political organization and ran against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was echoed by the foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related harassment" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A handful of followers from her political organization, the political party, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has stated that the proof presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a criminal finding.
