A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly vandalizing a large art piece of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, participated via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a person putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was ill, according to media sources, with the magistrate advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the art piece.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those people of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor said the council would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

At the time the artwork was first proposed, it received mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and appearance.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork depicts a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
